The wine-growing tradition that was introduced some 2,000 years ago when the Romans came to the Moselle is continued today with the cultivation of top wines.

The heat-retaining and mineral-rich steep slate slopes on the Moselle provide perfect growing conditions for the “queen of the white vine”, the Riesling.

Since Traben-Trarbach was the second-biggest wine-trading place in Europe in the second half of the 19th century the capacity of wine-cellars had to be enlarged like in no other place on the Moselle. So new cellars were built in large areas in the underground of the town.
